The National Association of State Foresters (NASF), in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and many other natural resource organizations, is coordinating the U.S. celebration of the 2011 International Year of Forests campaign, “Celebrate Forests. Celebrate Life.” Through the U.S. campaign, NASF aims to strengthen the connection between people and forests, elevate the conversation about the importance of forest health, and promote a national appreciation and investment in healthy forests and woodlands.

Throughout the year, the campaign will be encouraging Americans to make a personal connection to forests and to celebrate that connection. The program seeks to promote the positive impact of trees and forests to health in the daily lives of American citizens. The campaign’s focus is on the key role trees and forests play in:
- Clean Air and Water
- Ecosystem Health
- Economic Health
- Community/Personal Health
As part of the year-long campaign, NASF is encouraging participation through events listed on their online calendar, and are looking for photos and other media to share through the Celebrate Forests Flickr, YouTube and Facebook pages.
For more information on how you or your organization can participate, take a look at their online toolkit.

It has been over 135 years since J. Sterling Morton founded Arbor Day, a nationally-celebrated occasion that encourages tree planting and care. Founded in 1872, Arbor Day is often celebrated on the last Friday in April, but many states observe it on different dates that correspond to their best tree-planting times. Here in Washington State, it is the second Wednesday of April (check here for when you observe Arbor Day).
This past weekend, a team from Greenwood ventured out into the beautiful Snoqualmie Valley and assisted the Mountains to Sound Greenway on a restoration project at Three Forks Natural Area along the banks of the Snoqualmie River.
In our own way, we can all make an difference — this month, take some time to observe Arbor Day and go plant a tree!

The United Nations has declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests. The website provides and interesting array of tools and resources to promote discussion on forests.
Some interesting facts about world’s forests:

- Forest are home to 300 million people around the world.
- The livelihoods of over 1.6 billion people depend on forests.
- Forests are home to 80% of our terrestrial biodiversity.
- 30% of forest are used for production of wood and non-wood products.
As spring approaches, you can expect to hear more about this program. As if filling your car at the gas station isn’t bad enough at $3 per gallon, the former president of Shell Oil, John Hofmeister now with Citizens for Affordable Energy, says in this CBS report that Americans could be paying $5 for a gallon of gasoline by 2012.
Unfortunately, he is not alone, some analysts believe a run to $100 a barrel is inevitable with increased gas prices quickly following. Oil hit a two-year high just before Christmas at $91 per barrel and according to OPIS (Oil Price Information Service), the price is up 13.6% from last December and 76% higher from December 2008. Nearly three years after oil first traded at $100, demand is again rising quickly, with fast-growing nations like China and Russia attempting to satisfy their increased energy needs.
Gas or energy prices at these levels is not a pleasant thought, but I think we all know that imported energy prices are not going to go down. Whether they hit the levels mentioned above is anyone’s guess, but with the market for energy a truly a global phenomenon, the United State lacks some of the influence we have had in the past and we as consumers need need to adjust our behaviors to this reality.

Wood heat is a political topic?
No, this is not the 19th century, but in today’s political climate, energy and energy security are core issues in the political debate.
Who would have imagined that wood boilers might have played a role in shaping the landscape? Over the past six months, we have had the pleasure of speaking with many state and national government representatives regarding the use of clean wood-fired central heating as an essential part of the nation’s energy portfolio — clearly the message is getting through.
As we get closer to November 2nd and the political race heats up — we encourage you to stay engaged with your local races and ensure that your elected officials understand the benefits of clean, renewable wood heat!

It always a nice surprise when someone notices your work. We were recently surprised by an award for Best Product of 2008 from BUILDERnews magazine. Winners were selected because they reflected significant contributions to the homebuilding industry, by raising the bar and pushing the limits for technology, efficiency and affordability while taking into account environmental concerns.
Take a read here to read more.

If you have turned on a television, you have likely heard of the Duggars — the Arkansas family that has 7x the number of children as the US average. Several years ago, they installed a Greenwood Furnace to heat their home and hot water. They have a 7000 sq ft home and a hot water demand that rivals a small motel.
Periodically, the media picks up on the fantastic installation done by Oren Atchley, a local plumbing and heating firm. In the current Discovery & TLC series, “17 Kids and Counting” there is an entertaining and educational segment on the Greenwood Furnace in the “Cheaper by the Duggars” episode.
